Bible verses for anxiety

Anxiety is worry with the volume turned up: tight chest, racing thoughts, a sense that something's wrong even when nothing is. These verses speak to fear directly and to the God who says, repeatedly, 'I am with you.'

If anxiety is making daily life hard, or you're having thoughts of harming yourself, please talk to a doctor or a crisis line in your country. Scripture can sit alongside real help; it isn't a replacement for it.

A verse to start with

For anxiety

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

World English Bible (WEB)

Why this fits

Five short promises in one verse: I'm with you, I'm your God, I'll strengthen you, I'll help you, I'll hold you up. It's addressed to Israel in exile, people who had real reasons for fear. The verse doesn't argue with the fear. It answers it with presence, which is what anxious people usually need first.

  1. Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

  2. Philippians 4:6-7

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

World English Bible (WEB) · Letter (epistle)

Notice the sequence. Anxiety, then prayer with specific requests, then thanksgiving, then a peace that doesn't make logical sense ('surpasses all understanding'). Paul isn't offering a technique so much as describing what happens when the anxious loop gets interrupted by turning outward.

  3. Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

World English Bible (WEB) · Psalm (poetry)

Not 'I won't be afraid' but 'when I am afraid.' David wrote this after being captured by enemies, so the fear was warranted. The verse assumes fear will come and describes what to do in the middle of it. That's more useful than pretending it won't.

  4. 2 Timothy 1:7

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

World English Bible (WEB) · Letter (epistle)

Paul is writing to a younger leader who seems to have been timid under pressure. The verse contrasts a spirit of fear with three things: power, love, and self-control (or a sound mind). For anxiety that feels like losing control of your own thoughts, that last word is the one to hold onto.

  5. John 14:27

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

World English Bible (WEB) · Gospel (Jesus’ words and life)

Jesus says this the night before his arrest, to friends who are about to be terrified. The peace he offers is explicitly 'not as the world gives,' which usually means removing the threat. His is a peace that can exist while the threat is still there.

  6. Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

World English Bible (WEB) · Psalm (poetry)

The whole psalm is about the ground shaking and God staying put. 'Very present' means near, available now, not eventually. For an anxious moment, the picture of a refuge you can step into immediately is the point. The psalm goes on to picture mountains falling into the sea and nations in uproar, then answers with 'Be still, and know that I am God.' It was written for people whose world felt unstable, which is roughly what anxiety feels like from the inside.

  7. 1 Peter 5:7

casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

World English Bible (WEB) · Letter (epistle)

The Greek word for 'worries' here can also mean 'cares' or 'distractions.' Peter is telling scattered, persecuted believers to hand the whole pile over, and the reason he gives is simply that God cares. Anxiety often carries an unspoken belief that no one else is holding this. This verse says otherwise.

How to use these verses

When anxiety is high, long reading rarely works. Choose one short line, such as Psalm 56:3, and repeat it slowly while you breathe out. Later, when things settle, read the full chapter to see where the line came from.

Common questions

What does the Bible say about anxiety?

It treats anxiety as real and common, gives practical instruction (pray specifically, give thanks, remember God is near), and repeatedly answers fear with presence rather than explanation. It doesn't promise anxious feelings will never return.

Is there a short Bible verse for anxiety I can memorize?

Psalm 56:3 is one sentence: "When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you." 1 Peter 5:7 is another.
