Bible verses for panic

In a panic attack you cannot read a paragraph. You can hold about five words. So the first verses here are short enough for that: Peace, be still. When I am afraid, I will trust in you. The later ones are for afterward, when the fear of the next one sets in. None of them is a treatment. Panic responds well to real help, and the safety note below means it.

Panic attacks are common and very treatable, and you deserve treatment, not just verses. A doctor or therapist can teach you tools that work in minutes. If you are having chest pain, difficulty breathing that does not ease, or symptoms you have not had before, get medical care now rather than assuming it is panic.

A verse to start with

For someone in a panic

Mark 4:39

He awoke, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

World English Bible (WEB)

Why this fits

Jesus, woken in a boat that is filling with water, says three words to the storm: “Peace! Be still!” Panic feels exactly like that boat. This is the verse to say on the exhale, over and over, because it is short enough to say while breathing and because the one who said it was speaking to a storm that stopped. It is not a technique. It is a name to call.

7 verses for someone in a panic

  1. Mark 4:39

He awoke, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

World English Bible (WEB) · Gospel (Jesus’ words and life)

Jesus, woken in a boat that is filling with water, says three words to the storm: “Peace! Be still!” Panic feels exactly like that boat. This is the verse to say on the exhale, over and over, because it is short enough to say while breathing and because the one who said it was speaking to a storm that stopped. It is not a technique. It is a name to call.

  2. Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

World English Bible (WEB) · Psalm (poetry)

“When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.” Eleven words, and honest ones: not “I am not afraid.” David writes it while captured by enemies. It is a sequence to repeat: fear arrives, trust is chosen, fear loosens, and the sequence runs again. In a panic attack that repetition is the whole prayer.

  3. Psalm 61:2

From the end of the earth, I will call to you when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

World English Bible (WEB) · Psalm (poetry)

“When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” The psalmist does not claim to be able to climb it. He asks to be led. Panic is the heart overwhelmed, precisely, and this is a prayer for during it: not to fix it, but to be taken somewhere higher than the wave.

  4. Psalm 46:1-3

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas; though its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with their swelling.

World English Bible (WEB) · Psalm (poetry)

“We won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas.” A panic attack is the earth changing under you. This psalm was written for a city under siege and it is honest that the shaking is real. The refuge is “very present,” meaning here, now, before the shaking stops.

  5. Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

World English Bible (WEB) · Prophecy

“You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.” The word for “steadfast” means propped up, leaned. It does not say your mind will never race. It says a racing mind can be leaned, again and again, onto something that holds. For the days between attacks, when you are bracing for the next one.

  6. Philippians 4:6-7

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

World English Bible (WEB) · Letter (epistle)

Paul’s instruction, written from custody, is a practice rather than a feeling: every specific fear becomes a specific request, with thanks. The peace that follows is described as a guard posted at the door of your mind. After an attack, this is what to do with the fear of the next one: hand it over, item by item, and let the guard stand.

  7. 2 Timothy 1:7

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

World English Bible (WEB) · Letter (epistle)

“God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.” The word for fear here is timidity, a shrinking back. It is not a verse that says panic is a spiritual failure; Paul wrote it from prison to a frightened young man. It says the panic is not who you are, and the self-control is a gift, not a demand.

The one I’d leave out

“Fear not” as a command. Someone will tell you the Bible says “fear not” 365 times, one for each day, as if the count settles it. Every one of those is said to a frightened person by someone offering presence, not issued as a rule. Psalm 56:3 is what the Bible actually sounds like about fear: when I am afraid, I will trust. Not: don’t be.

What to say with it

How to use these verses

Pick one short verse, Mark 4:39 or Psalm 56:3, and make it yours before the next attack, so it is already in your mouth when you need it. The longer ones are for afterward. And please, if you have not, talk to a doctor; the verses will keep you company through treatment, and treatment works.

Common questions

Is panic a lack of faith?

No. Elijah, David, and Paul all describe states that sound a great deal like panic, and none of them is rebuked for it. Panic is a body’s alarm system misfiring. Faith is what you lean on while it does; it is not a switch that turns the alarm off.

What is the shortest verse for a panic attack?

“Peace! Be still!” from Mark 4:39. Three words, said by Jesus to a storm. Say it on the exhale.

Should I pray instead of taking medication?

Both, if your doctor recommends medication. Nothing in the Bible sets prayer against medicine; Luke was a physician and Paul told Timothy to take something for his stomach. Pray, and take what helps.
