   Jacob is sleeping on the ground, running from his brother, on his way to a country he's never seen. God says: 'I am with you, and will keep you, wherever you go.' The promise is for the road and for the arrival. It's the verse for a moving van.

2. Genesis 12:1

   Now Yahweh said to Abram, Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you.

   'Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father's house.' Abraham's move is the first act of the whole biblical story. He went without knowing the destination. If your move involves leaving people you love, this is the passage that takes that seriously.

   'Lord, you have been our dwelling place for all generations.' Moses wrote this without a permanent home, wandering for forty years. Home, in this psalm, is a person rather than a place. That's the verse for the week when you don't have an address yet.

   'Yahweh himself is who goes before you.' The new city has already been walked ahead of you. The verse ends with 'don't be afraid, don't be discouraged,' which are the two moods of unpacking boxes in a place you don't know.

5. Psalm 139:9-10

   If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

   'If I settle in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand will lead me.' The psalmist imagines the most remote move possible and finds God there too. Distance from what's familiar isn't distance from God. The psalm has been listing places you could go to get away from God, and coming up empty each time. For a move, that's a comfort rather than a threat: the person who is leading you there is already there.

   'Unless Yahweh builds the house, they who build it labor in vain.' A verse for the arrival: the new home is a house until something more is built in it. It's a good line to read aloud on the first night.

   By faith, Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out to the place which he was to receive for an inheritance. He went out, not knowing where he went.

   Abraham 'went out, not knowing where he went.' The writer of Hebrews calls this faith. If your move feels like a leap, Scripture has a category for it, and it's a positive one. Abraham left an established city for a promise with no map. Hebrews lists that as the first thing he did right. You don't need to know how a move will turn out for it to be an act of trust rather than recklessness.
