Bible verses before surgery

The hours before surgery are mostly waiting, and waiting is when fear gets loud. These verses are short on purpose. They're about presence and peace, which is what you can hold onto when everything else is in other people's hands.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

'Don't be afraid, for I am with you.' Five promises in one verse, ending with being held up by God's right hand. It's addressed to people with real reasons to fear. It's the verse most often written on a card and slipped into a hospital bag.
Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

'Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.' The psalm doesn't say the valley is avoided. It says the walk through it isn't alone. Before surgery, that's the honest version of comfort.
Philippians 4:6-7

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Pre-surgery anxiety comes with specific questions. Paul's instruction is to make each one a request, then let peace stand guard. The peace 'surpasses understanding,' meaning it can be present even when the outcome is unknown. Paul's instruction has a structure that helps in a pre-op bed: take each specific fear, turn it into a specific request, and add one thing you're thankful for. The peace he describes stands guard over your thoughts; it doesn't require the outcome to be known.
Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

'A very present help in trouble.' Present means now, not later. This is the verse for the pre-op room, when help needs to be immediate and you can't do anything but lie still. The psalm goes on to picture the earth changing and mountains shaking, then says 'Be still, and know that I am God.' Surgery involves handing control to other people. This psalm was written for people who had no control either.
Exodus 33:14

He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

'My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.' Moses asked for exactly this and got it. Going into an operating room, you go under, and rest is literally what happens. God says this to Moses when Moses is afraid to go forward without him. That is why people facing something frightening have returned to this image: a presence that goes in with you.
Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety.

'In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety.' Written for a normal bedtime, it fits the night before surgery unusually well: lying down, sleeping, being kept safe by someone who's awake.
Psalm 73:26

My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

'My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.' The verse admits the body fails. That admission is what makes the second half believable. It's for someone whose body is the reason they're in this room.

The one I’d leave out

James 5:15. “The prayer of faith will heal the one who is sick” is a real verse in a real passage about elders anointing the sick. Sent before surgery it quietly puts the outcome on the patient’s faith, and if the outcome is bad, the verse has hurt them twice. Isaiah 41:10 promises presence, which is the thing you can actually promise.

What to say with it

“I’ll be thinking about you at 7 tomorrow. You don’t need to reply.”
“Can I read you something short? You don’t have to say anything back.”
“I’m going to text your husband after, so you don’t have to update anyone.”
Don’t say: “You’ll be fine.” You don’t know that, and they know you don’t. Say you’ll be there.

How to use these verses

Write one verse on a card and take it with you; Isaiah 41:10 or Psalm 23:4 are the usual choices. If you're the one waiting in the family room, Psalm 46:1 is short enough to say over and over.
