The hours before surgery are mostly waiting, and waiting is when fear gets loud. These verses are short on purpose. They're about presence and peace, which is what you can hold onto when everything else is in other people's hands.

The peace 'surpasses understanding,' meaning it can be present even when the outcome is unknown. Paul's instruction has a structure that helps in a pre-op bed: take each specific fear, turn it into a specific request, and add one thing you're thankful for. The peace he describes stands guard over your thoughts; it doesn't require the outcome to be known.
Psalm 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

'A very present help in trouble.' Present means now, not later. This is the verse for the pre-op room, when help needs to be immediate and you can't do anything but lie still. The psalm goes on to picture the earth changing and mountains shaking, then says 'Be still, and know that I am God.' Surgery involves handing control to other people. This psalm was written for people who had no control either.
Exodus 33:14
He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

Write one verse on a card and take it with you; Isaiah 41:10 or Psalm 23:4 are the usual choices. If you're the one waiting in the family room, Psalm 46:1 is short enough to say over and over.
