Romans 8:28

What’s happening here

Paul has just spent a paragraph on suffering: creation groaning, believers groaning, the Spirit interceding “with groanings which can’t be uttered” because we don’t even know what to pray. That is the setting for verse 28. It isn’t a cheerful verse dropped into a cheerful chapter; it’s the turn in a passage about pain. Notice what it does and doesn’t claim. It doesn’t say all things are good. It says God works in all things toward good, and it says this for a specific group: those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. The next verses define the “good”: being shaped into the likeness of Christ. That is a much larger and slower promise than a job offer or a clean scan.

How it gets misread

Quoted as “everything happens for a reason” or as a guarantee that a hard situation will turn out well. Paul says neither. He says God is at work in the situation, and that the eventual good is who you become, not necessarily what you get.

How to use it

Good for someone who needs to know that their suffering isn’t wasted. Not good as a quick answer to someone in fresh grief; it can sound like the loss was a means to an end. Read verses 26–27 with it so the groaning is included.
