What’s happening here
Paul is thanking the Philippians for a gift of money, and he wants to say thank you without sounding like he was desperate. So he explains: he has learned to be content whether he has plenty or nothing, whether he is full or hungry. Then verse 13: I can do all things through him who strengthens me. The “all things” in context are the two just named, abundance and want. The verse is a statement about surviving either without losing his footing. It is one of the most quoted verses in sports, and it has nothing to do with winning.
How it gets misread
Printed on athletic gear as a promise of success. Paul is describing the strength to endure lack, not the strength to achieve.
How to use it
For someone facing scarcity, illness, or a season of doing without, this is the right verse, read with verses 11–12. For someone about to compete or interview, it still applies, but the strength on offer is to handle the outcome either way, not to secure the outcome you want.
