Isaiah 41:10
Said to people with every reason to be afraid.
Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.
What’s happening here
Isaiah 40–48 is addressed to Israel in Babylon, small, defeated, and surrounded by a superpower. Chapter 41 pictures the nations trembling at a coming conqueror, and then turns to Israel: but you, my servant, whom I have chosen. Verse 10 gives five promises in quick succession: I am with you, I am your God, I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you. The last is the most physical: a right hand that holds you up. The verse doesn’t promise the empire will go away. It promises a grip that won’t.
How it gets misread
Rarely misread, but often quoted without the people it was said to. Knowing they were captives makes “don’t be afraid” a braver thing to say.
How to use it
One of the best verses for fear of any kind, and short enough to memorize. Good before surgery, before a hard conversation, and for anyone who feels small against something large.
