   The most-used graduation verse. Worth knowing: it was written to exiles with seventy years of waiting ahead. That doesn't make it a bad choice; it makes it a patient one. 'Hope and a future' is a promise with a long horizon.

   Let no man despise your youth; but be an example to those who believe, in word, in your way of life, in love, in spirit, in faith, and in purity.

   'Let no one despise your youth; but be an example.' For a graduate heading into rooms where they'll be the youngest person. It's encouragement with a challenge built in, which most graduates appreciate more than praise. Paul wrote it to a young leader who would be doubted because of his age. The list that follows (speech, conduct, love, faith, purity) is a practical answer to that doubt. It respects the graduate enough to expect something of them.

4. Psalm 32:8

   'I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go.' One sentence, God speaking. For someone who's just finished being taught, a reminder that the teaching continues. The 'eye upon you' at the end of the verse is a picture of attention rather than surveillance. For a card, it says the graduate isn't being sent out alone, and it says it in a single clean line.

5. Joshua 1:9

   Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.

   'Be strong and courageous... God is with you wherever you go.' 'Wherever you go' is the graduation phrase. It works for a graduate moving away, starting a job, or entering the military. Joshua was stepping into leadership after Moses, which is about as intimidating as a first job gets. The verse is long enough that many people quote only the final clause; that works fine on a card.

6. Micah 6:8

   He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does Yahweh require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

   'Act justly, love mercy, walk humbly with your God.' If you want to give a graduate one sentence to live by, this is the one many people would choose. It fits on a card and on a life. Micah delivers it as the answer to what God actually wants from a person, after ruling out grand gestures. It's a traditional graduation choice for a reason: it describes a good life in nine words without preaching.

   being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

   'He who began a good work in you will complete it.' A completion verse for a completion day, with the reminder that the deeper work keeps going. Paul writes it to people he founded a church with, and his confidence is in God's follow-through. For a graduate, it says the person they're becoming isn't finished, and isn't being left to luck.
