What’s happening here
Matthew 18:15–20 lays out what to do when a fellow believer sins against you: go privately, then take one or two others, then tell the church. Verses 18–20 back up that process with authority: what the gathered believers bind and loose is bound and loosed, and where two or three gather in Jesus’ name, he is there. The small number is the two or three witnesses from verse 16. The promise of presence is real, but it is a promise about a difficult, careful confrontation done rightly, with Jesus among those doing it.
How it gets misread
Used to reassure a small prayer meeting that God shows up when few people come. He does, but this verse is about something more specific and more demanding.
How to use it
Best for people entering a hard conversation of accountability, especially in a church setting. For encouragement about small gatherings, Acts 2:42–47 is a better fit.
