What’s happening here
Jesus has just been rejected by the towns where he did most of his miracles and is about to clash with the religious leaders over Sabbath rules. Between those, he turns to the tired. Come to me, and I will give you rest. Then, oddly: take my yoke. A yoke is a tool for work, fitted to an animal’s shoulders so the load can be pulled. The rest on offer is not the absence of a load but a load that fits, carried alongside someone gentle. The contrast is with the religious leaders, who Jesus later says tie up heavy burdens and won’t lift a finger.
How it gets misread
Heard as a promise of a lighter schedule. It is a promise of a different master.
