Losing a parent, at any age, is losing the person who remembers you before you remember yourself. People are often surprised by how hard it hits when the parent was old, or ill, or difficult. The Bible does not rank losses. It gives a psalm that says “when my father and mother forsake me,” and a God who describes himself as a father with compassion. These verses were chosen for adult children, and for those comforting them.
For someone who lost a parent
Psalm 27:10
When my father and my mother forsake me, then Yahweh will take me up.

“As a father has compassion on his children.” The psalm reaches for the best of what a parent is and says that is what God is like toward you. Then the honest line: he knows we are dust. For someone who has just watched a parent become fragile, that sentence is not bleak. It is the relief of being known completely and still held.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Jesus calls mourners blessed, which is a strange thing to say until you notice he does not tell them to stop. The promise is comfort, and he does not say when. For an adult child who feels they should be “handling it” because the parent was old, this verse says the grief is right, and that it is headed somewhere.
Isaiah 46:4
Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver.

God speaking to Israel: “even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you.” If your parent lived long, this verse is about them: carried to the end. If they were a believer, it can be read as a promise kept. It is one of the gentlest verses in the Bible about growing old, and it is right at a funeral.
Psalm 116:15
Precious in Yahweh’s sight is the death of his saints.

“Precious in Yahweh’s sight is the death of his saints.” One line, and it says the thing adult children most want to hear: the death was not a clerical event. It was noticed, and it mattered. Read it slowly. It works at a graveside when nothing longer would.
John 11:25-26
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

Said to Martha at her brother’s tomb, before anything has changed. Jesus does not say “I will do a resurrection.” He says “I am the resurrection,” and then asks her, with the loss fresh, whether she believes it. If you cannot answer yet, that is allowed. Martha said yes with tears on her face.
Psalm 23:4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

The most familiar verse in the Bible for a reason: it names the valley of the shadow of death and walks through it. Many people heard this at their parent’s bedside or funeral, which is itself a comfort; it connects the two. The confidence is in the shepherd, not in the road.
“Everything happens for a reason”. Not a Bible verse, and the wrong thing to say when a parent has died, because it invites the person to hunt for the reason. Psalm 103:14, “he knows we are dust,” says the true thing: mortality is known and held, not explained.
For a funeral or graveside, Psalm 23 or Psalm 116:15. For a card, Psalm 103:13–14 or Isaiah 46:4 if the parent lived long. For yourself, in the weeks after, Psalm 27:10 read at night.
