Bible verses after a breakup

A breakup is a real loss and it is grieved like one, whatever anyone says about how you will find someone else. The Bible has more for a broken heart than it gets credit for. It has a God who is near to it, a promise of a love that does not leave, and a verse about mercies that are new in the morning, written by someone who had watched everything fall apart. These are for the first weeks, not for figuring out what went wrong.

A verse to start with

For someone going through a breakup

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

World English Bible (WEB)

Why this fits

“He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.” The psalm is about God gathering the scattered and naming the stars, and this line sits in the middle of it, as if a broken heart is one of the big things. Binding a wound takes time and does not skip the pain. It is the right first verse for a breakup because it treats the injury as real.

7 verses for someone going through a breakup

  1. Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

World English Bible (WEB) · Psalm (poetry)

“He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.” The psalm is about God gathering the scattered and naming the stars, and this line sits in the middle of it, as if a broken heart is one of the big things. Binding a wound takes time and does not skip the pain. It is the right first verse for a breakup because it treats the injury as real.

  2. Psalm 34:18

Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

World English Bible (WEB) · Psalm (poetry)

Near to the brokenhearted. David wrote it from the floor after a humiliating day, which is where a breakup puts you: not just sad but embarrassed, replaying it. The verse says the nearness is a response to the breaking, not a reward for getting over it.

  3. Jeremiah 31:3

Yahweh appeared of old to me, saying, Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love. Therefore I have drawn you with loving kindness.

World English Bible (WEB) · Prophecy

“I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have drawn you with loving kindness.” Said by God to Israel after years of the nation walking away and coming back. If a breakup has left you feeling unlovable, or unchosen, this is the counterweight: a love that has already decided, and is not reconsidering.

  4. Lamentations 3:22-23

It is because of Yahweh’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

World English Bible (WEB) · Poetry

New every morning. Written in a burned city by someone who had lost everything. This is the verse for the first mornings, when you wake up and remember. It does not say the day will be good. It says you were not abandoned in the night, and that is evidence for the morning.

  5. Isaiah 43:18-19

Don’t remember the former things, and don’t consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

World English Bible (WEB) · Prophecy

“Don’t remember the former things. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it springs out.” Not advice to forget the person; the exiles it was written to remembered everything. It is a refusal to let the past be the last word. Some days you will not believe a new thing is springing up. The verse says it is, anyway.

  6. Romans 8:38-39

For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

World English Bible (WEB) · Letter (epistle)

Paul’s list of what cannot separate you from God’s love. Read it after being separated from someone’s. The point is not that this love replaces the one you lost; it is that there is one love in your life that is not up for renegotiation.

  7. Philippians 1:6

being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

World English Bible (WEB) · Letter (epistle)

He who began a good work in you will complete it. Paul wrote it to people he loved and was confident about, because of God, not because of their track record. After a breakup you can feel like a project someone gave up on. This verse says the most important work in you is still in progress and was never theirs to finish.

The one I’d leave out

Proverbs 31 or Ephesians 5. Well-meaning people send the marriage passages to the freshly single as a kind of “next time.” Not now. The person is grieving, not shopping. Psalm 147:3 is about the wound; send that.

What to say with it

How to use these verses

Psalm 147:3 the first night. Lamentations 3:22–23 in the mornings. If you are sending one to a friend, keep the note to a sentence and skip anything that sounds like advice.

Common questions

Does the Bible say anything about breakups?

Not about dating breakups directly; the world it was written in did not have them in this form. It says a great deal about broken hearts, being left, and beginning again, which is what a breakup is made of. Psalm 147:3 and Lamentations 3 were written for exactly this shape of loss.

Is it okay to be angry at the person?

The psalms are full of anger at people who hurt the writer, and they were kept in the Bible. Bring the anger to God rather than to the ex’s phone. Ephesians 4:26 is the guidance: be angry, and don’t let it settle in and rot.

What verse can I send a friend after a breakup?

Psalm 147:3 with one line: “This is a real loss and I’m sorry. This came to mind.” Nothing about the ex, nothing about the future.
