Find a verse
Start with what’s happening, in your own words. If I’ve written for that moment, you’ll get the verses I’d look at, with why each one fits. The whole Bible is one tap further down.
What you can type
- The person and the moment: my friend lost her mother, my dad before surgery, starting over, can’t sleep. Hand-picked verses come first.
- A phrase you remember: be still and know, love is patient, camel through the eye of a needle. Quotes require the exact words.
- A saying you think is in the Bible: God won’t give you more than you can handle, money is the root of all evil. I’ll tell you whether it’s a verse, a misquote, or not Scripture at all, and show the closest real one.
- Wording from the Bible you grew up with: whosoever believeth, fear not, the LORD Almighty. Where the World English Bible uses different words, I translate and say so.
- A reference: John 3:16, Psalm 23, Matt 6 25-34.
- A person, story, or event: Moses burning bush, Zacchaeus, the prodigal son.
- A word: clay, sparrows, debt. Every verse of the World English Bible that contains it, with the matching words marked.
All Scripture text on Better Verses comes from the World English Bible (WEB), a modern-English translation in the public domain. The search recognizes approximate wording and the common ways people remember passages, but results are always displayed from the WEB. When a search sounds like a hard moment, verses that comfort rank first, and the results say so.
